Code of Conduct
This page draws on the SETI Post-Detection Hub's code of conduct and collaboration expectations, with thanks to Hub members who collaboratively shaped this document. The full and latest version can be found on the Hub website.
Conduct Expectation for Collaborative Working
The SETI Post-Detection Hub is a professional network designed to further the field of post-detection research. It is committed to broadening the scope of SETI inquiry by bringing together a diverse mix of researchers across disciplines, geographies, and backgrounds to work together on evidence-based approaches to post-detection. We support an open and collaborative environment to enrich research culture and ensure that a wide range of voices help shape this field.
Transdisciplinary research is central to the Hub, and international collaboration requires curiosity and generosity. When working together on documents, just as we would in person, we commit to respectful dialogue. No one is an expert in everything, and listening and mutual respect creates valuable opportunities for learning and collaboration.
Best Practices
- Respectful Interactions – Value inclusion and avoid adversarial or belittling comments in the editing environment.
- Care – Create an environment where people feel safe to contribute.
- Mutual Responsibility – everyone contributes to creating an encouraging and responsible culture.
Care
- Patience – Mistakes can happen when editing : warmth and patience helps in a diverse and interdisciplinary community of editors. Rudeness and belittling language are not okay.
- ‘’’Invite Improvement’’’ – If you notice something missing or unclear, please add supportively. Don’t expect other editors to have the same knowledge base as you do, or the same experience of Wiki software.
- Zero Tolerance for Harassment – Aggressive, harassing, or abusive behaviour will not be tolerated.
Specific Harassment Guidelines
Harassment is defined by its impact on the person affected, not the intent behind it.
Harassment includes:
- Personal attacks or verbal abuse
- Offensive comments or name-calling
- Intimidation or bigotry of any kind
- Unwelcome sexual attention
- Solicitation or scams
If you experience or witness harassment, please contact the admin to take appropriate action, including removing editing privileges and asking individuals to leave the group. A collective resolution process involving additional volunteers will be used when necessary.
Culture of Responsible Learning
- Recognise Uneven Knowledge – Listen to those with lived experience, and do seek to welcome evidence-based perspectives from groups not within the canon.
- Continuous Learning – Editors are responsible for educating themselves around issues of discrimination. Support learning around systemic issues in science and society.
- Share Learning Resources – Editors are encouraged to explore resources on systemic and epistemic injustice, cultural appropriation, Indigenous knowledge, and intersectionality. As well as using the wiki to grow shared references to key works, we encourage people to seek out varied further resources. Examples include:
- Chanda Prescod-Weinstein’s Decolonising Science Reading List
- The SETI Indigenous Studies Working Group Statement
