Add a Reference

Contribute a Reference

You can add references in the Bibliography in two ways: one simple and one more advanced.

Please choose the method that works best for you.

➤ Option A: Simple reference (without BibTeX)

This workflow adds a reference directly in the theme page (without BibTeX)

Click and scroll in any of the Bibliography pages and:

• Add your reference under the correct letter in the alphabetical list.

Please use this format:

  AuthorLast, First. Year. "Title." ''Journal or Source''. Date. [Link]

➤ Option B: Structured entry for more advanced users (includes BibTeX)

This workflow creates a unique reference page with the useful addition of BibTeX.

1. Create a new unique page for the reference:

Bibliography/References/Lastname_Year_Title

2. Use this template:

== Title ==
'''Author.''' Year. [Link] ''Journal or Source''. Date.

''Themes:'' [[Category:YourTheme1]], [[Category:YourTheme2]]

3. Do not write the reference into the Bibliography theme page directly. Please add the reference to the unique page instead using this format:

{{:Bibliography/References/Lastname_Year_Title}}

The SETI post-detection wiki welcomes translation!

This wiki builds on community knowledge practices developed by Wikimedia, including the model outlined on Wikipedia:Translation.

In the spirit of Wikimedia and commons knowledge-sharing practices, you are encouraged to translate any page into your language. Please retain a note about the original source and link back to the original page. If your translation adds new insight or local context, please annotate and adapt (described below).

How to Translate a Page

• Create a new page. Use the same title, but with a language prefix at the start of the page.

For example:

• French: `fr:Contribute/Translate`
• Japanese: `ja:Contribute/Translate`
• Indonesian: `id:Contribute/Translate`

 See the list of ISO 639-1 language codes that MediaWiki uses for language prefixes.

• Add a notice at the top of the new translation page and link back to the original page.

For example:

This is a translation of [[Contribute/Translate]] from English to French.

• Translate the page using clear, consistent terms.

• Annotate if needed to reflect cultural or linguistic context.

For instance, if a term carries a different meaning in your region, or your language shifts the concept in translation, feel free to add a footnote, or include a short translator’s note to briefly explain the nuance.

• At the bottom of the page, add this tag to include it in the translation category:

[[Category:Translated Pages]]

* Do I need an account to edit? A: Yes, you'll need to log in to edit or create pages.

* What if I make a formatting mistake? A: Wiki editors work together to help clean up mistakes. If you have never used a wiki before, your focus can be on editing and including the content.

* Can I use a citation tool like Zotero or BibTeX? A: Absolutely. You can paste a BibTeX block inside a tag on your reference page. See the description How To Add a Reference.

* How do I know which theme my reference fits into? A: Use your best judgment. There are multiple themes. Again, other editors may help put references in a place that makes more sense. You can also ask for guidance on the Talk page.

* Can I translate part of the wiki? A: Please do. We actively encourage translation. See: Contribute/Translate.
